About Tarikere

Tarikere Town is located in Chikkamagalur District of Karnataka State. This small town is also the Taluka Headquarters. The name of this town is given after the numerous water tanks that surround it. Kere means huge water tanks. The water tanks that surround Tarikere Town are Ramanayakankere, Kenddarahlla, Doddakere, Dalavikere and Chikkere. The administration of this town is looked after by Tarikere Town Municipal Council which has divided this town into 23 wards.

Location of Tarikere is at 13.82 0N Latitude and 76.03 0E Longitude. The elevation of this town is at 697 m above the sea level. The total area of Tarikere Town is 15.01 sq km. During summers, the temperature is about 28 0C and during winters the temperature of Tarikere is about 24 0C.
Tarikere is surrounded by Talukas like Chikkamagalur Taluka in the south west, Bhadravati and Shimoga Talukas in north, Hosadurga Taluka in east and Narasimharajapura Taluka in the west.

As per India Census, the total population of Tarikere is 35, 942. The percentage of males is about 51% and percentage of females is about 49%. The average literacy rate of this town is 68%. The official language used in Tarikere is Kannada but languages like English and Urdu are also spoken here. Out of total population about 79.74% people are Hindus, 18.84% people are Muslims and 0.99% people are Christians.

The main occupation of people in Tarikere Town is agriculture. The important crops grown here are Coconut, Betel nut, Areca nut, Betel Leaves, Ragi, Paddy, Mango, Banana and Corn. In the past, Tarikere Region used to grow paddy but now Areca nut is grown in huge amount in Tarikere. The economy of Tarikere is based on the agriculture. Tarikere Town has a Steel casting factory also.

Kemmannugundi

It is a hill station located at an elevation of 1434 m above the mean sea level. This hill station is also called Sri Krishnarajendra Hill Station in the memory of Krishnaraja Wodeyer IV who used to come to Kemmannugundi during summers. Beautiful gardens, lofty hills, gushing streams, cascading waterfalls and Baba Budan Giri Range are popular attractions around Tarikere.

The Amruteshwara Temple

This temple is located at Amruthapura, a town of Chikkamagalur District. The temple dates back to 1196 AD and was built by Amrutheshwara Dandanayaka who was a commander of Hoysala Rulers. This temple is located very close to Bhadra Reservoir.

Kalhattagiri Falls

This waterfalls offers eye captivating views when water gushes down from Chandra Drona hills from an altitude of 45 m.

Veerabhadreshwara Temple

This temple is a famous cave temple that dates back to the Vijayanagara Kingdom. The temple is located in a space between two rocks. The temple offers wonderful view of the surrounding with the Kalhatti Falls in its backdrop. The main deity is Lord Veerabhadreshwara, another form of Lord Shiva.

Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary

This sanctuary is home to many exotic flora and fauns. The animals and birds found in this sanctuary are Sambar, Sloth Bear, Flying Squirrel, wild boar, Mongoose, Emerald Dove, Hill Myna, Painted bush Quail, Grey Jungle fowl, Great Black Woodpecker, and Malabar Parakeet. Reptiles found here are Monitor Lizards and Marsh Crocodiles.

How to Reach Tarikere

Tarikere can be easily reached by road and rail. Tarikere Railway station is on the railway route connecting Talguppa and Birur. Trains that run between Bangalore and Shimoga and Mysore and Shimoga stop at Tarikere Railway Station.
 
Tarikere does not have any airport near to it. Travelers availing domestic or international flights have to get down at Humbi, Bangalore or Mangalore airports and then travel to Tarikere by rail or road.

As Tarikere has National Highway No. 206 (NH connecting Hommavar and Bangalore) passing through it, it is easily approachable via road. Tarikere is well connected to the district headquarters Chikkamagalur.
